About FUMC of Pekin

Welcome to the First United Methodist Church of Pekin located at 1315 Court St (across from the Lagoon).  Our church has over a 181 year heritage of serving our Lord in Pekin. We are constantly looking for new, innovative, traditional ways to reach persons for Christ; especially if they have never been part of a church before.

Core Values

  • At First United Methodist Church we believe that God created everything, that he sent his only son Jesus Christ to live among us and die for our salvation and that anyone who believes that Jesus is God's Son is saved.  We believe, accept and proclaim everything in the Apostles' Creed.
  • We believe that we can only be saved through Jesus Christ and that God encourages us to seek salvation in Christ.  We believe salvation is not a once-for-all-time event, but that a saved person can, through his/her actions and lifestyle, lose salvation; but that God never, ever gives up on us and on bringing us back into his kingdom.
  • We believe God sent us the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us, to help us understand God and God's word, the Bible, more clearly.
  • We believe the Holy Spirit fills us with the desire to serve Jesus and resist Satan.
  • We believe that the Holy Spirit gives us gifts when we ask for them and intend to use them for God's glory.
  • We believe Jesus Christ commissioned his believers to begin churches and use the churches to help serve the world spiritually, financially, and physically.
  • We believe it is our responsibility, as commissioned by Jesus Christ, to go into the world and make disciples for Jesus.
  • We believe in two sacraments ordained by God (made sacred by Jesus in the bible): Baptism and Holy Communion.  We do not believe either sacrament is required for salvation, but that both are required by God.
  • We believe in the inherent goodness in all people, even though given to evil through our involvement in the world.  And we believe through Christ, we have the strength to resist evil in whatever form it takes.
